10 Benefits of Senior Fitness & Why Our Members Love SilverSneakers!

By Jennifer Perras | February 14, 2021

No matter your age or physical condition, it is never too late to start exercising.  Fitness is for everyone and should be a part of a healthy lifestyle.  There are many reasons why people slow down and become more sedentary with age.  It may be due to health conditions, pain and inflammation, or worries about falling.  Some people even feel that exercise isn’t for them.   But the truth is, fitness is for everyone and becomes even more important as you age.

A regular exercise program can help boost your energy, maintain your independence, protect your heart, and manage symptoms of illness or pain.  Being active on a daily basis is also good for your mind, mood and memory.  You might even lose a few pounds, too!

Top 10 benefits of exercise for seniors

  1. Balance
  2. Flexibility
  3. Strength
  4. Disease prevention
  5. Decreased risk of falls
  6. Improved mental health
  7. Social interaction
  8. Better immune function
  9. Improved cognitive function
  10. More confidence and independence

At Kroc Greenville we offer a wide variety of fitness classes tailored to seniors.  Whether you are starting an exercise program for the first time in your life, or looking to add variety to your daily routine, we’ve got a class to suit your needs.

Why our members love SilverSneakers!

Kroc Member Emma Jean Sullivan shares why she loves the Kroc Center

“When I get to the Kroc Center I feel elated, enthusiastic, energized and equipped to do the task at hand.  From the time I walk in the door until the time I leave I feel welcomed into a family-friendly environment.  And then there’s Jennifer, our SilverSneakers instructor.  She is the best of the best!  Jennifer makes our workouts exciting, challenging but doable for individual needs.  Can I say I love her?  Ok, I love her!  I have invited several friends to join the SilverSneakers program at the Kroc.  When you know something is good then you pass it on.  I cherish my time at the Kroc.  Thanks to all!”

Kroc member Joanne Conner shares her story.  “Having retired from Berkshire Hathaway C. Dan Joyner REALTORS at the end of 2019, I needed to develop some structure and healthy habits in my new life.  Among other activities from Pickleball to walking about 15 miles per week, I attend the Kroc Center’s SilverSneakers program at least twice per week.  Despite the issues with the pandemic, Jennifer Perras and the Kroc Center have offered seamless training and workouts that have made the craziness of 2020 palatable.  Additionally there is a huge social aspect that I think we have all missed in the past year.  The Kroc continues to help us maintain social distancing at the same time providing excellent programs for us older folks.”

At the Kroc we’ve got a class for you no matter your fitness level.

SilverSneakers Classic: You’ll move to the music through exercises that increase strength, range of motion and cardiovascular output.  We do some exercises standing and some seated on the chair.  A chair is always available for support.  This class emphasizes low impact cardio and core stability.

Ten Tips on Forming Healthy Habits: Hear From Our Fitness Manager!

Meet Our Fitness Manager

If you participate in Group Fitness at Kroc Greenville, you probably know Jennifer, our Fitness Manager.

Jennifer not only oversees a wide range of offerings, from Personal Training and Group Fitness to Kroc Fit and Senior Programs, but she also is passionate about sharing information to help guests on their journeys in becoming healthier, more active and more confident.

Jennifer’s Top Ten Tips for Forming Healthy Habits

  1. Micro workouts count! Everyone can find 10 minutes during the day to workout. Whether at the gym or at home, you can get it done!
  2. Have a plan and stick to it! Find motivation with a time-based fitness challenge.
  3. Keep it simple! Workouts don’t need to be complicated. If you are just starting out on your fitness journey, keep the exercises basic.
  4. You can get a lot done in 30 minutes. Most people think you need an hour in the gym. However, any amount of time you are moving makes a difference. Try a 30 minute HIIT class!
  5. The best workout is the one you enjoy! Fitness is for everyone. Find something that makes you feel good and stick with it.
  6. Weight loss will happen slowly. Making better food choices and committing to a workout schedule are the keys to success.
  7. You can’t go wrong by moving. When it comes down to time, even if you only have 20 minutes, just move. Try a total body interval workout.
  8. Yoga is harder than you think! It may be intimidating at first. Practice makes perfect! Yoga is essential for mind, body and spirit.
  9. Fueling your workout is important. What you put in your body to fuel your workout and what you put in after for recovery matters. Choose unprocessed foods, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats to get your fire burning.
  10. The key is to keep coming back. Falling off of the workout bandwagon comes with consequences. In order to feel successful, make a plan and commit to your fitness routine.
